Turkey is close to signing an agreement with China to build a third nuclear power plant

2023-09-23

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources AlPasran. Turkey is close to signing a deal with China to build Turkey's third nuclear power plant, Bakhiraqar said on Friday.
"We agreed on a key point for the construction of a third nuclear power plant in the Igneda region of Kerclareli province (in western Turkey) and we should be able to conclude negotiations in the next few months," Bayiral was quoted as saying by TRT. There are other parties interested in the project, but we [Turkey and China] have agreed on enough issues to be close to an agreement."
Barakhtar noted that Turkey is continuing negotiations with Russia and South Korea on a second Sinop nuclear power plant. According to the long-term plan, Turkey needs about 20 gigawatts of nuclear power. Turkey is also in talks with countries that can build small modular reactors, such as 5 gigawatts.

After meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he discussed the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the Turkish city of Sinop. The plant will be Turkey's second nuclear power plant after Akkuyu.

Alexei Rosatom, head of Rosatom, said: Likhachev previously told the satellite news agency that Russia and Turkey have turned to discuss the practical issue of Turkey's second Sinop nuclear power plant, and ROsatOM proposed that Sinop nuclear power plant adopt a four-unit configuration like Akkuyu nuclear power plant. Likhachev also proposed to use the income from the sale of electricity from the Akkuyu nuclear power plant for the construction of a second nuclear power plant.

Turkey's first nuclear power plant - "Akkuyu" nuclear power plant is the largest joint project between Russia and Turkey. When the four units equipped with advanced Russian VVER-122 reactors are scheduled to be put into operation, the plant will generate about 35 billion KWH of electricity per year, which can meet 10 percent of Turkey's electricity needs. The first unit is expected to start up in 2024.
The "Akkuyu" nuclear power plant is the first project in the global nuclear power industry to adopt the build-own-run model. The project cost about $20 billion. The "Akkuyu" nuclear power station meets all modern international nuclear safety requirements. (Russian Satellite News Agency)
