Botswana's first iron ore mine starts production and exports begin

Ikongwe, Botswana's first iron mine, has started producing and exporting iron ore to China for the first time, a company executive said on Tuesday, Mining.com reported, citing Reuters, as the country seeks to wean its economy off its over-dependence on the diamond industry.

Although the contribution of diamond mining to GDP has declined in the past few years and fell to less than 20% last year, Botswana remains heavily dependent on the gem mining industry, with diamond exports accounting for more than 70% of the country's foreign exchange earnings.

Ikongui is owned by Vision Ridge, a unit of India's Yashomann Industries, and the first iron ore exports arrived in China in September.

"We already have an order for 50,000 tonnes of iron ore a month from a state-owned steelmaker," said Chetan Patil, a manager at Viewbridge.

Viewbridge hopes to produce 1m tonnes of iron ore a year for the first 10 years of production, at a grade of up to 65%.

Iron ore is currently shipped in containers through South African ports, but Sight Bridge is in talks with Botswana Railways to ship large shipments through Mozambique's Maputo port.

"It helps us expand production and exports," he said.

International iron ore prices have soared over the past year, hitting a record high of $240 a tonne in May.
